Abstract: The technologies adoption for sustainable use of woody biomass is a key to reducing forest degradation in a country where more than 70% of the population have in firewood and charcoal their (as) main energy source. The improved stove is an efficient technology usage of energy from woody biomass. As from 2006, the Government through the Ministry of Energy - ME, has been introducing and promoting this technology in the country, in order to improve the energy efficiency and forest sustainability as well as environmental conservation, but its adoption has been showing slow or almost absent, the usage of the improved stove in the country which is covering only 1% of the population. In this regard, was performed this study, whose theme is "Percepcão das famílias sobre as características dos fogões melhorados para o uso da biomassa lenhosa." The study aimed to describe the perceptions of the population on the characteristics of stoves and how these contribute to the adoption of the new technologies. The study took place in Canhandula, Dondo District, Sofala Province. This was a field research and investigated a population of 50 households. Data analysis was based on Excel statistical platform and evaluation of the frequency of propositions using the Likert scale, in which was measured the degree of agreement and disagreement statements regarding the household’s attitude towards adoption of the technology concerned. Evaluating household’s perceptions on characteristics of improved stoves, were found that families either of the adopters or non-adopters have a positive perception of the use of improved stoves. From the analysis of perceptions, the complexity attribute is the one whose show more evident in the perception of households which improved stoves usage and testability attribute, for families who do not use improved stoves. It also indicates that social capital is the factor that most contributes to adoption decision of improved stoves, so once exposed improved stove and known the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, there are the greater level of adoption. The study refers liability of the leading actors in this kind of activity, namely, the Government, researchers and implementing agencies, therefore a limitation on information disclosure in some cases, the quality of technology and how to access it, are limiting factors for the adoption on improved stoves in Canhandula neighborhood.(TRADUÇÃO NOSSA)
